DAAD promotes interdisciplinary Ukrainian studies

Internationalisation of Germany, bi-/ multi-lateral cooperation

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is funding the establishment of two centres for interdisciplinary Ukrainian studies at German universities. A network led by the European University Viadrina and the project of the University of Regensburg came out on top in the selection process. Around five million euros in funding from the Federal Foreign Office will be available for both centres until 2028.

Two projects came out on top in the selection of centres for interdisciplinary Ukrainian studies: The "Denkraum Ukraine" centre at the University of Regensburg and the "Kompetenzverbund Interdisziplinäre Ukrainestudien Frankfurt (Oder) - Berlin (KIU)" centre at the European University Viadrina in cooperation with Berlin universities and scientific institutions. Both projects will receive around 750,000 euros in 2024. A total of almost five million euros will be available until 2028.

The selected centres should contribute to the expansion of expertise on Ukraine in Germany and strategically bring together social science and humanities research and teaching on Ukraine between departments and institutions. The centres also play a special role in science communication and the networking of German, Ukrainian and international players from science and civil society: current research results are to be prepared for the specialist audience and a broader public, especially for institutions involved in the reconstruction of Ukraine.

DAAD President Joybrato Mukherjee said:

"Shortly after the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we at the DAAD are sending a clear signal of cooperation and solidarity by funding the establishment of the two centres. Both centres will strengthen Ukraine expertise in Germany and work intensively with partners in Ukraine. Russia's war in Ukraine has shown that we in Germany need more expertise on Eastern Europe and Ukraine in particular. Rebuilding the country and bringing Ukraine closer to the European Union also requires in-depth knowledge of Ukraine's history, politics, economy, culture and society. Both centres will make an important contribution to this."
