UK and Germany strengthen science and research links

The UK Science and Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan, and German Federal Minister of Education and Research Bettina Stark-Watzinger signed a Joint Declaration of Intent committing both countries to broadening and deepening their science and research links.

The joint declaration on bilateral research cooperation aims to strengthen cooperation between Germany and the UK in key technologies such as artificial intelligence, battery, quantum and fusion technologies, as well as research safety.

Together with her British counterpart, Minister Stark-Watzinger also opened the first UK-German Research Dialogue in London. The meeting brought together leading science and research organisations from both countries, including the Max Planck Society, the Royal Society, Universities UK and the Helmholtz Association, to discuss opportunities for collaboration in research and development. The UK and German governments intend to set up a strategic working group to implement the planned collaboration.

The UK government will also look at using funds available through the £337 million International Science Partnerships Fund to enable UK researchers and innovators to collaborate with German partners on key projects.
