4th EU-Africa Summit underscores the need for research, science, technology and innovation

The 4th EU-Africa Summit took place on 2-3 April 2014 in Brussels and convened more than 60 heads of state and high-ranking representatives of government and 90 delegations from European and African states.

Federal Chancellor Merkel was also in attendance. The Summit reviewed the objectives laid down in the EU Strategy for Africa which was jointly adopted in 2007 and assessed the progress achieved up to now. The positive developments of recent years will be taken into account in the further development of the joint strategy, which was decided at the Summit. A roadmap sets out the implementation of joint activities in 2014-2017 in the five priority areas of cooperation. The African states, represented by the AUC, had already drafted a policy document on African interests in the area of cooperation on "Science, Technology and Innovation": the Science, Technology & Innovation Strategy for Africa 2024 (STISA-2024). African Union heads of state and government officially adopted STISA-2024 on 3 July 2014. The frame of reference for European interests is the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation "Horizon 2020".

In their Declaration, the heads of state and representatives of government underscored the necessity of continued investment in research, science, technology and innovation to support the sustainable development of societies. It is very encouraging that the instrument of the High Level Policy Dialogue (HLPD) on science, technology and innovation between both continents will be maintained.
