Alberta-Germany Technology Commercialization Program Announces First Round of Projects

Three Alberta small to medium-sized enterprises have been selected to receive support for commercializing innovative products and services through the Alberta – Germany Collaboration Fund for Product Development and Commercialization.

The program is a partnership between Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education and the German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR) aimed at supporting joint research and commercialization activities between companies  in Alberta and Germany in strategic areas of technology. The program will help participants become more globally competitive through developing technology and research-based alliances with the potential to increase international trade and economic growth and diversification. The program may also lead to the development of new models of collaboration between Alberta and Germany that leverage each partner’s respective research & technology capabilities, address common priorities, and accelerate technology commercialization.

The first joint Alberta – Germany projects have been selected through a competitive process by a committee of independent technology experts and will begin their collaboration on April 1st, 2013.

Selected Projects

  • Alberta company Boreal Laser will collaborate with Nanoplus of Germany to develop new atmospheric pollution monitoring technology using Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs).

  • Calgary Scientific Inc. and Visus Technology Transfer GmbH are undertaking a Product Development and Technology Demonstration project to enable advanced physician to physician collaboration in medical imaging analysis for the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease.

  • Frac Rite Environmental Ltd. is a Calgary based environmental service company that has teamed with its German partner HPC – AG, one of Germany’s leading providers of environmental solutions, to provide a pilot demonstration of Canadian fracturing technology for environmental remediation at two Project sites in Germany on behalf of HPC – AG’s industrial clients.

The GCCIR is planning a second symposium in Germany for the late fall of 2013 and a second Call for Proposals shortly after.

The German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research

The German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research is dedicated to collaboration between Canada and Germany in research and innovation. The Centre supports collaboration between industry and academic research organizations to enhance knowledge and technology transfer. By establishing an enduring network of professionals and researchers the centre will strengthen relationships in strategic areas of shared technological priorities for sustainable and prosperous societies.
