EURAXESS Science Slam series: 6 winners ‘slammed’ their way to Brussels

Between 24 and 29 September and on 16 October, the finals of the first global EURAXESS Science Slam series were successfully held at six locations across the globe: ASEAN, Brazil, China, India, Japan and North America. Six champions have won the battles and will join the EURAXESS Conference "Raising Researchers' Voices - opinions on jobs, careers and rights", on 21-22 November 2013, Brussels (BE), where they will have the opportunity to showcase their exciting performance once again.

Presenting research in a creative, innovative and comprehensible way to non-experts was the key for the selected young researchers to win the votes of the audience and juries in the live finals. 33 finalists had been chosen and they tried their best to charm the audience by singing, rapping or even by including a search dog, in order to win the much coveted tickets to Brussels. But – there could only be six winners: in Beijing, YU Yang from Wuhan University sang his way into the hearts of the 180 guests and jury members about the “Wonderful World” of “Floating Wetlands”; in Washington, D.C., Dr Katrien Kolenberg, Marie Curie Fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, thrilled the audience with her outstanding communication skills – astrophysics never seemed easier; in Singapore, Dr Phanramphoei Frantz, a virologist working at BIOTEC in Thailand, trumped the other finalists with her humorous rap song; in Rio de Janeiro, Milene Möller, a PhD student in Genetics and Plant Breeding at the University of Sao Paulo, captured the audience and the jury with a funny and interactive presentation of her work “on soybean resistance to stink bugs”; in Pune, Ms. Shraddha Karve, PhD student at the Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune convinced the panel of judges with her excellent research project and enthusiasm for science; and in Tokyo on October 16th, at the last of the six EURAXESS Science Slam finals, over 100 guests selected Ms Mugiko Komatsuda, from the University of Tokyo as the winner, who gave a truly stellar performance.

EURAXESS Science Slam provides a platform for researchers of any nationality and research field to showcase their scientific work and to engage with their peers and the wider public. This fulfils the missions of EURAXESS Links which aims to connect researchers worldwide. In a broader context, “EURAXESS – Researchers in Motion”, a pan-European initiative by the European Commission, seeks to facilitate the mobility of researchers and to enhance scientific collaboration between Europe and the world. EURAXESS Science Slam shall serve as an instrument to raise awareness of this initiative which supports researchers with their career development. The next edition of this global event will take place in all EURAXESS Links countries and regions in the second half of 2014.

The central management and coordination of the EURAXESS Links Initiative has been commissioned to the Project Management Agency at the German Aerospace Center (PT-DLR) by the European Commission.
