The Federal Government of Germany presents the Federal Report on Research and Innovation (BuFI) every two years. The BuFI 2024 was published on May 22. The report provides comprehensive information on the research and innovation policy of the Federal Government and the Länder and presents clear, up-to-date facts and figures on the various aspects of the German research and innovation system.
How can research and innovation be used to address societal challenges, strengthen Germany’s competencies for the future and create a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship? How are science and research, innovation and technological development promoted and politically informed? What financial means are provided for this and with what success? The BuFI report answers these questions and provides comprehensive information about the current research and innovation policy of the Federal Government and the Länder. Underpinned with facts and figures, the BuFI report provides an overview of research and development (R&D) expenditure, personnel and results and of how Germany compares internationally.
The report presents the various elements and actors in the German research and innovation system. It is supplemented by a database of those organisations and institutions that carry out research and development outside of industry and universities. These include non-university research institutions, federal and state research institutions, and R&D funding institutions and academies.
