German BioCon Valley again awarded with Bronze Label of European Cluster Management Excellence

BioCon Valley Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the North German cluster for Life Science and Health, is again after 2012 awarded with the Bronze Label of Cluster Management Excellence of the ESCA. This label demonstrates the interest of a cluster management organization in cluster excellence which is reflected through its participation in the benchmarking exercise realized on cluster initiatives in Europe. BioCon Valley is one of the 7 German Biotech cluster awarded with the Bronze Label of Cluster Management.

Cluster-Excellence.eu puts together the most experienced persons and organizations in Europe to identify and set up a meaningful set of quality indicators and peer-assessment procedures for cluster management. The intention is to develop training materials and set up an approach for quality labeling of cluster management, in order to help cluster managers achieve high levels of excellence in their duties and to succeed in the peer-assessments. Cluster-Excellence.eu will then create and act as a club of professionals and institutions, to promote cluster management excellence, and diffuse the adoption of the Quality Label among its members.

The "ESCA - The European Secretariat for Cluster Analysis" (former European Cluster Excellence Initiative ECEI, a project co-financed by the DG Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission) developed quality indicators that are expected to result in an internationally comparable and recognised quality label for cluster management.

“The re-awarding of the Bronze label testifies the high quality of cluster management, the BioCon Valley offers its member companies and research institutions in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The increasing number of companies and employees in the life science industry confirmed that there is a vibrant and successful innovation climate in the region” says Heinrich Cuypers, Senior Project Manager of BioCon Valley.

As part of the EU efforts to create more world-class clusters across the EU by strengthening cluster excellence, the Commission launched in 2009, under the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme, the European Cluster Excellence Initiative (ECEI). To continue the successful work of this pan-European initiative which involved 13 partners from nine European countries ESCA - The European Secretariat for Cluster Analysis was established by one of the partners, VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH, to offer practical advice to cluster management organizations. Today, ESCA is a network of cluster experts from 27 countries.

“We were proud to be awarded again from an external EU wide ranking for cluster management excellence. The award is an international acknowledgement of our efforts in the region and it is a stimulus to proceed and to improve our excellence,” so Heinrich Cuypers.
