German research opportunities more popular than ever

At the Naturejobs Career Expo 2011 in London on 22 September, 55 exhibitors presented research opportunities in the area of life sciences and natural science to international visitors. The joint presentation by the German representatives, who accounted for one-third of all the exhibitors at the fair, made an especially strong impression. At the 100-m2 German area, 28 representatives from 17 German universities, research institutes and intermediary organisations offered visitors insight into the German research sector and the career opportunities available to them.

As part of the research marketing campaign “Research in German – Land of Ideas” funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) organised a joint German exhibition stand for the third time at the Naturejobs Career Expo. As in previous years, the career fair was held at the Business Design Centre in London Islington.

The German exhibitors – which included seven institutions funded by the Excellence Initiative – were on hand to explain and consult visitors who were interested in PhD programmes, post-doctoral positions, research groups and junior professorships.
The international visitors were impressed by Germany’s strong presence at the event and responded positively to the “German Pavilion”. A visitor from Brazil was elated, saying, “I just found my dream job! I was raised bilingually and can speak Portuguese and English fluently. In a personal consultation, I learned that the working language for the post-doc position, which I had my eye on, is English. I didn’t know you could do research in Germany in English. I’m really excited and I’m definitely going to apply!“

The German exhibitors were equally enthused by the large crowds and growing interest in scientific careers in Germany, and were very happy to have participated at the event.
