The project “Dialogue on wastewater treatment processes of heavy metal contaminated water bodies of the city Mariupol and development of strategies/processes for the reduction of emissions from steel industry” is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science.
The project is coordinated by East-West-Science Centre (OWWZ) of Kassel University together with the Ukrainian partner from Priazovsky State Technical University (Mariupol). Experts from the Westphalian University, Kassel University, Duisburg-Essen University and the German Society for Membrane Technology e.V. along with specialists from the Mariupol City Council, Metinvest Group and the Mariupol Sea Port complete the project consortium. The diversity of stakeholders will ensure and support the progress and practicability of the approach.
The project itself contains two main objectives of cooperation:
- Scientific description of the current state in the pilot region Mariupol, joint development of recommendations for the process of innovation / waste water treatment and discussion of transferability
- Initialization of a sustainable cooperation network of researchers and users, which will support further R&D projects on a national and/or EU level along with the support of students and staff mobility between the network partners
To achieve these goals the network plans to use several work instruments like a task-related self-assessment questionnaire to determine the status quo or online-conferences to ensure an effective information exchange. A wrap-up workshop will be used to discuss the results of the scientific approach and in addition will offer the possibility to work on future cooperation ideas.
Background information:
Mariupol is the tenth largest city in Ukraine and is of regional importance in the south-eastern part of the country. The city is located on the northern coast of the Azov Sea at the mouth of the Kalmius River in the Azov Sea. It was the centre of grain trade, metallurgy, heavy engineering, including the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works and Azovstal, and played a key role in the industrialization of Ukraine. Due to the military conflicts in the Donbass region, Mariupol became the provisional administrative centre of the Donetsk region in 2014.
