Germany and Australia intensify cooperation on solar energies - 900.000 AUD for joint research projects

The signing of two agreements to strengthen German-Australian scientific cooperation by representatives of Government and Science from both countries has taken place at the residence of the German Ambassador in Canberra on

February 18. The two ministries responsible for Science and Research (BMBF and DIISR) agreed in the first document to support the mobility of researchers within in the next two years.

This fund is eligible to researchers in the fields of nanotechnology, environmental research, information and communication technology as well as geo- and marine sciences and offers 500.000 AUD in total. Additionally research programs in the field of solar photovoltaics are jointly sponsored with 400.000 AUD. The total benefit of this funding is worth about 900.000 AUD, which corresponds to about 600.000 €. Solar energy is also in the focus of the second agreement signed between the German Fraunhofer-Institute for Solar Energy Systems and the Australian Solar Institute. Both institutes agreed on intensified cooperation, further exchange programs and joint workshops. This very agreement reflects the strategic value which both countries attach to the field of renewables and especially solar energy.

The signing ceremony was followed by a reception hosted by German Ambassador Dr. Michael Witter. It marked a highlight of a visit of 15 scientists from German research Institutes to key Australian partners during the course ofthe week.

Between 14 and 19 February 2010 the delegation payed visits to relevant universities and research facilities in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra. The opportunity to meet colleagues in person and to be able to discuss future research programs was greeted by both sides. Prospect common research opportunities were also discussed during a seminar with representatives of administration and business participating.

„This partnership will allow Australian researchers to make the most out of their strengths by taking part in exchanges and collaborations with their German counterparts.“ Senator Kim Carr, Minister of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research said. Ambassador Dr. Michael Witter welcomed the mutual efforts of Germany and Australia to fight the climate change and to introduce renewable energy in both countries. He stressed that the collaboration between the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems and the recently founded Australian Solar Institute has been one of the subjects of official talks held between Chancellor Angela Merkel and PM Kevin Rudd in July 2009 in Berlin.
