For the fourth year in a row, highly motivated student from renowned North American universities will travel to Aachen, Germany, this summer to conduct short-term research projects as part of the UROP International Program at RWTH Aachen University. During their ten-week stay, the students from schools such as Berkeley, MIT, Georgia Tech, University of Michigan, Rice University, will have the chance to hone their research skills while also getting an intensive introduction to the German language.
UROP International (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) is pleased to report a record number of 192 applications for the supervised research positions offered in summer 2011. At the end of the highly competitive selection process, 32 candates were selected, most of whom were also awarded a scholarship from RWTH Aachen University which will cover the student’s living costs while in Aachen.
Through UROP International, students in the early stages of their studies get the opportunity to conduct independent short-term research projects and gain valuable hands-on experience. The projects are structured and supervised by professors and research staff at RWTH Aachen University and the nearby Forschungszentrum Jülich. Most projects focus on the engineering and natural science fields, but are offered in other fields such as medicine, architecture, and business administration as well.
UROP International is anchored in the Excellence Initiative and is one of the three program components of the entire UROP project. The other two project components respectively place students of RWTH Aachen into research projects at leading universities in the U.S. and Canada, or into research projects at home at RWTH Aachen.
