The IES program is funded within the institutional strategy, “Research – Relevance – Responsibility” of the 3rd line of the Excellence Initiative. It provides international students a chance to acquire study-abroad experience and at the same time supports even stronger exchange relationships between the University of Tübingen and its partner universities.
Participation in the IES program allows international students from all over the world further academic qualifications in International & European Studies, the development and expansion of intercultural competence as well as getting to know the University of Tübingen as an excellent place for study and research.
In seminars taught by outstanding Tübingen researchers students learn about and discuss diverse topics on Europe and the EU. Depending on the program, students either take a variety of introductory courses (Winter and Summer Programs of four to six weeks) or in-depth courses (Fall Term Program of three months) on Europe and the EU. Each program takes an interdisciplinary approach. Thus, class sessions cover diverse areas such as EU politics, history, law, and international business and culture.
This challenging academic program is complemented by study trips to Strasbourg and Berlin, including tours of the European Parliament, interviews with EU politicians, and visits to influential companies in the economically strong region of Baden-Württemberg (e.g. Mercedes Benz). In German language courses and intercultural workshops students improve their German language and intercultural competency skills.
The curriculum was developed in close cooperation with the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Law and central institutions of the University of Tübingen. The program's strength lies within the diversity of the course curricula as well as the small class size which allows individual learning and mentoring. Each program concludes with a certificate and students can earn ECTS credits.
A buddy program in which students of the University of Tübingen accompany the IES participants during their entire stay in Tübingen provides the opportunity for cultural and language exchange as well as for getting to know German student life first-hand. As concrete measure for German and international students the Buddy Program contributes to the implementation of strategic goals of the internationalization such as integration and intercultural competence development.
