Kenyan university joins international graduate training program

Internationalisation of Germany, bi-/ multi-lateral cooperation

Kenya's Strathmore University is participating in the Industry Immersion Program, a joint initiative of the Business School ESMT Berlin and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), increasing the total number of locations to four.

The Industry Immersion Programme (IIP) prepares science, engineering and mathematics graduates for the transition from academia to industry. In addition to the locations in Cape Town (South Africa), Kigali (Rwanda) and Accra (Ghana), Strathmore University in Nairobi (Kenya) was added to the initiative as a new training centre.

The inclusion of the Kenyan university comes after ESMT Berlin partnered with Canada’s Academics without Borders in the last quarter of 2020, to help escalate the IIP. AwB uses a sustainable "train the trainer" educational approach to help recruit volunteers to assist the local team at Strathmore University with programme management and tutoring skills. The aim is for Strathmore University professionals to be able to run the programme fully independently following the supervision of AwB volunteers the following year.

The pilot project, which was launched in 2017, is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
