PACE-Net Recommendations for a Strategic Plan on Research, Development and Innovation in the Pacific

The FP7 project PACE-Net has recommended key priorities for strengthening research, development and innovation collaboration between Europe and the Pacific.

They include priority recommendations in five Horizon2020 societal challenges, strategic policy priorities, and strategic action priorities in the Pacific.

The addressed challenges are

  • Challenge 1: Health, demographic change and wellbeing;
  • Challenge 2: Food security, sustainable agriculture & forestry, marine & maritime and inland water research;
  • Challenge 3: Secure, clean and efficient energy;
  • Challenge 5: Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials, and-
  • Challenge 6: Inclusive, innovative and secure societies.

The strategic policy priorities target three key areas:

  • The need for a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda;
  • the need for Pan-Pacific Research Governance, and
  • the need for Systematic Capacity Building.

The strategic action priorities reflect immediate and mid-term actions. Examples are the creation of regional thematic task forces for research coordination and the wide dissemination of outcomes of the PACE–Net project to catalyze the development of national & regional research policy frameworks.

PACE-Net recommends also regional priorities for the Pacific by contributing to the Pacific Plan review.
