In March 2009, Germany and Brazil initiated a dialogue on Research for Sustainability. The first German-Brazilian workshop on this issue took place in Sao Paulo as collaboration between the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT) in preparation for the German-Brazilian Dialogue on Science for Sustainability (D4S). The BMBF conducts this dialogue with a number of emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. On April 12, 2010, the proceedings of this first German-Brazilian Conference on Research for Sustainability were presented in Sao Paulo during the official inauguration of the bilateral German-Brazilian Year of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Amongst the findings of the workshop, participants stressed the necessity to think of research for sustainability integrated in a system, taking into account the role of environmental services and economic and socio-cultural factors. A simultaneous consideration of ecology, technology and socio-economic factors was seen as crucial – instead of just focusing on each of the aspects in isolation.
