"Research in Germany" Booth and Further DFG Activities at the 7th European Congress of Mathematics in Berlin

The initiative “Research in Germany”, represented amongst others by the German Research Foundation DFG, and major German mathematical research institutions jointly present research and funding opportunities at this year’s European Congress of Mathematics (ECM) in Berlin.

From 18 to 21 July representatives and researchers from the respective organisations and institutions provide information at a collaborative booth. Furthermore, the DFG invites to a panel discussion about the role of funding agencies regarding internationality, interdisciplinary research and research careers.

Held once every four years, this year’s ECM has chosen the German capital Berlin as its venue. Organised by the German Mathematical Society (DMV), the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM), the Research Center Matheon, the Einstein Center for Mathematics (ECMath) and the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS), the congress covers all areas of theoretical and applied mathematics and attracts mathematicians from Europe and all over the world.

The initiative “Research in Germany” – initiated by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and represented here by the DFG, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Fraunhofer Society (FhG) – jointly presents mathematical research and funding opportunities in Germany. The collective performance together with the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) and its graduate school (BIGS), the DFG funded Collaborative Transregional Research Centre “Mathematical Modelling, Simulation and Optimisation Using the Example of Gas Networks”, the Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics (MFO), the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM) and the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) exemplifies both – the variety of national research institutions and programmes and their international connectivity.

Early career and senior researchers have the opportunity to meet scientists and programme managers of the respective institutions and organisations “in person” at the “Research in Germany” booth. All scientists are kindly invited to ask individual questions on research projects, cooperation possibilities, and national research funding activities or take or send home an attractively designed mathematical postcard or “kaleidozykel”.

Additionally, programme managers from the DFG and the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) jointly organise a funding agencies panel at this year’s ECM which aims at addressing the role of funding agencies with respect to three relevant topics: the current status and role of international cooperation, interdisciplinary research in the mathematical sciences, and the support and advancement of early career researchers.
