Revised online glossary on education in Germany

New bilingual KMK index of terminology is now accessible on the Eduserver

The German Education Server (Eduserver) now presents the newly updated edition of the Glossary of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Cultural Affairs of the Länder (KMK) on the education system in Germany. This online glossary provides German and English language descriptions of 128 terms – ranging from A for Abendgymnasium to Z for Zweiter Bildungsweg. The Eduserver thus offers its national and international users one more important instrument for researching information. The Eduserver is a joint-venture service of the federal government and the Länder states, and it is coordinated by the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF).

The updated glossary originates from the recently published KMK document “The Education System in the Federal Republic of Germany 2008: A description of the responsibilities, structures and developments in education policy for the exchange of information in Europe“. This dossier was compiled by the German EURYDICE Unit of the Länder in the Secretariat of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany in cooperation with the German EURYDICE Unit of the Federal Government in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. EURYDICE is an institutional information network on educational information in Europe.

The online version of the glossary is nested into the service structure of the German Education Server and offers additional features: terms can be immediately navigated, definitions can easily be integrated into text documents citing a reliable source and related entries are interlinked. In view of international users, this glossary complements the comprehensive English language information offered by the Eduserver, which you can find in the subportal ”Find out about Germany“.

The DIPF is one of currently 86 research and research-service institutes as well as four associated members of the Leibniz Association. The Leibniz Institutes address the scope of natural, engineering and world sciences as well as economic, social and space sciences and human science. Leibniz Institutes operate strategically and thematically on questions relevant to society as a whole. Therefore, institutes belonging to the Leibniz Association are jointly funded by the federal government and the states.
