Science News from the German Southwest: Baden-Württemberg at the AAAS Annual Meeting 2011.

Baden-Württemberg, the German Southwest, is one of the most innovative regions in Europe, particularly dedicated to science and education. A share of 4.4 % of the State’s GDP is invested in research and development – more than in most countries all around the world. On the occasion of the AAAS Annual Meeting, Feb 17-21, in Washington D.C., scientists from some of Germany’s premier universities will present highlights of recent scientific achievements in a wide variety of disciplines.

To present examples of the State’s excellence in research and innovative strength, representatives from three of Germany’s premier universities will visit the AAAS Annual Meeting 2011. They will be available to answer your questions and for discussions on a professional level - and there will much to discover for attendees: How can we talk silently and still being heard? Stop by and just ask our KIT researchers who are presenting the prototype of a speech recognition system! What is Cell Signalling, what does it have to do with evolution and how does it impact on medical research? Learn more from Freiburg scientist! Heidelberg – a popular destination for millions of tourists, but also for brilliant academics? We can prove it!

During the AAAS Session Energy Efficiency in Europe and the United States: Success Stories and Future Potentials on Friday, Feb 18, 2011, 10:00 am – 11:30 am at the Washington Convention Center Rm 206 experts from North America and Europe will discuss problems and solutions of efficient energy supply. Providing energy on a reliable and sustainable basis and to improve energy efficiency is one of the most crucial challenges the world is facing today. This symposium will contribute to a vital dialog across the Atlantic about what has been achieved and still has to be done in order build a more energy efficient society. Experts from Europe and the U.S. will share their experience of the past and ideas for the future. The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission will present R&D projects on end-use efficiency. The application of this research in the development of codes of practice and European policies will be discussed. Research on energy efficiency includes technologies such as Solid State Lighting, efficient electric motors and power supplies, or building insulation. The contribution to energy efficiency of one of the most innovative regions in Europe, the state of Baden-Württemberg, located in the German Southwest, will be presented. The focus will be on international collaboration in energy efficiency science and technologies. An interdisciplinary perspective on energy efficiency science and its applications will be given by the Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE), located in Cambridge, MA. It is partner within the Fraunhofer-MIT-Alliance, which brings together Europe's leading research organization and one of America's most renowned universities, combining world-leading experience to tackle today's critical energy questions.

Everybody who is curious about what Baden-Württemberg has to offer for students and young scientist, will gain a lot from the workshop Discover the German Southwest: Study and Research in Baden-Württemberg at the Goethe Institute, 812 7th Street NW, Washington D.C., Friday, Feb 18, 2011 – 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

Attendees will find out more about exchange and career opportunities for students and young scientists at some of Germany’s premier universities. Information about funding will also be provided.
