This agreement will pave the way for UAS7 to develop partnerships with individual campuses in the SUNY system, which comprises 467.000 students at 64 campuses across New York. These partnerships will facilitate student and faculty exchanges, transatlantic research collaboration, and the development of joint and double degree programs. UAS7 represents a leading cohort of German universities of applied science, which were established in the 1970s in response to industry demands for practice-oriented, academically grounded degree programs.
Bernd Reissert, President of the Berlin School of Economics and Law and Speaker of the UAS7, observed that, “SUNY and UAS7 share a strong track record of collaboration with business and industry. We both support the capacity of local firms to innovate and of workers to continuously adapt in increasingly knowledge-intensive sectors. We both recognize that playing this role in our regional economies requires a global strategy.” The presidents of the UAS7 member institutions began exploring possibilities for collaboration during a visit on September 13th to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse, where they discussed opportunities for collaboration with various departments and administrators. SUNY-ESF and UAS7 share key strengths in teaching and research, including a focus on renewable energies. New SUNY agreements will build on UAS7’s existing partnerships with Drexel University, the University of New Orleans, and the University of Pittsburgh.
UAS7 is a strategic alliance of seven leading German universities of applied sciences committed to excellence in teaching and research. This ‘alliance for excellence‘ includes the Berlin School of Economics and Law, Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Munich University of Applied Sciences, Münster University of Applied Sciences and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. Collectively, they offer a broad variety of 470 undergraduate and graduate programs to German and international students. Since 2006, undergraduates from U.S. and Canadian universities have had the opportunity to study for a semester at a UAS7 member institution, followed by a six month internship, through the Study and Internship Program with scholarship support from the KfW Bank, the DAAD, and UAS7 and its members. UAS7 is represented in the U.S. and Canada by its Liaison Office in New York City.
