The Eberswalde University for sustainable Development (HNE Eberswalde) and the Fraunhofer WKI Braunschweig participate at the Year Germany and India 2011/2012 - Infinite Opportunities

The Eberswalde University for sustainable Development (HNE Eberswalde) and the Fraunhofer WKI Braunschweig participated together with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) at the Indo-German Urban Mela in Mumbai/India from 13th-22nd April 2012.

The Indo-German Urban Mela is a part of the “Year Germany and India 2011/2012: Infinite Opportunities”. That celebration commemorates 60 years establishment of Indo-German diplomatic ties. The exhibition with the thematic focus on “city spaces - Stadt-Räume” consists of modern pavilions designed by the architect Markus Heinsdorff

The research-pavilion at the Urban Mela was arranged by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in co-operation with different German universities and research institutes. The participation of the HNE Eberswalde was organized by the research group “madera-woodresearch” which is located at the department of WoodScience and Technology in Eberswalde together with the Fraunhofer WKI Braunschweig.

The WKI Braunschweig will initiate a workshop on energy efficient housing. Two big facade models known as Interactive Facade Cross Section, a contribution of the HNE Eberswalde, are located in the pavilion. The models were built by students under coordination of research associates in Eberswalde. The Interactive Facade Cross Section shows a back ventilated and natural insulated facade made from renewable raw materials (mainly bamboo in this case) directly compared to a conventional back-ventilated facade and represents parts of the research work in Eberswalde and Braunschweig.  Integrated the visitors will find measuring techniques in building physics.  In real research work these techniques were used to find out more about the processes within the wall. It is important to know what happens in walls to adjust the requirements to the material development.

Moreover, the establishment of research structures between the HNE Eberswalde, the WKI Braunschweig and scientific partners in India and the joint research work related to the area of wood science and technology, renewable raw materials and energy efficient housing were presented. During the past two years the ties between Indian and German co-operation partners for example the IPIRTI Bangalore, the FRI Dehradun and the IIT Roorkee have been established. The sustainable product development of materials from natural resources for energy efficient building constructions in Germany and India is a main topic in the cooperation.

Parallel to the scientific work “madera-woodresearch” also cooperates with the Indian Goethe Institute Max Mueller Bhavan. The product designer in the team Stefanie Silbermann was chosen to do a two months artist in residency in the creative center “Shanti Road 1” in Bangalore. The objective of that artistic project will be the connection of natural resources, nature in and around Bangalore and the Urban Mela exhibition ground.

The Urban Mela had a very positive feedback by the Mumbaikars and tours through further four cities. The next dates are Bangalore from 22nd June - 1st July, Chennai from 24th August - 2nd September, New Delhi from 26thOctober - 4th November and Pune from 11th -20thJanuary.

The project is financially supported by the International Bureau of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
