On October 20, 2014, TU9, the alliance of leading Institutes of Technology in Germany, will launch a Massive Open Online Course on “German Engineering”. The course will present the diversity of German engineering studies at the TU9 Universities and will provide an insight into the key questions, contents, structures, and working methods of various engineering disciplines and courses of study. During the nine weeks of the course, participants interested in the STEM-subjects will discover what Excellence in Engineering and the Natural Sciences - Made in Germany means.

MOOC@TU9 course format

MOOC@TU9 is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). At the beginning of each course week, renowned professors from the TU9 Universities present their subject areas and their university in live videos. Afterwards, the participants work on complementary tasks and discuss with each other in the forum. The tasks provide an insight into the requirements and contents of the degree programme in question. Additionally, the participants’ individual questions will be answered by academic staff.

In this way, participants can learn more about their personal aptitude for an engineering degree and can get in touch with other prospective students.

The course design allows for participation in either the whole programme or in individual topics only.

MOOC@TU9 audience

MOOC@TU9 caters for anyone interested in a postgraduate engineering degree in Germany. It provides participants with information about engineering degree programmes and curricula. All course topics can be understood with the basic knowledge of a first degree or equivalent knowledge in the relevant fields. The course is held in English.

Background Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) are usually open for an unlimited number of participants and can be accessed online. They consist of traditional course materials (videos showing lectures or experiments, problem sets, and exercises) and interactive forums where the users meet and interact. MOOCs offer new means of access to higher education for a great number of participants worldwide. They can help to promote and develop innovative and flexible methods of teaching and learning.
