Recognising the importance of international research collaboration in enabling technologies and addressing global challenges, European Crucible was established to stimulate new international opportunities for early/mid-career researchers. Developed from the national ‘Scottish Crucible’ programme and working with the Scottish Research Pools, European Crucible seeks to establish new researcher networks for aspiring research leaders, and to facilitate international collaborations for new interdisciplinary research initiatives and innovations.
The 2022 European Crucible will once again be run as a virtual programme, as a series of interactive virtual 'Labs' held between late March and early May 2022 and is supported by the Scottish Government via the Scottish Funding Council.
A cohort of fifty researchers, twenty-five from Scottish institutions and twenty-five from institutions across European countries, will be selected for the programme by a panel of top researchers.
The call is open to early/mid-career researchers employed in Scotland or Europe, and carrying out research in science, engineering, technology, medicine, healthcare, arts, design, humanities, business, or social and political science. Ambitious university Lecturers and Readers (i.e. Assistant and Associate Professors), Research Fellows and equivalents in research institutes and industry with experience of managing their own research, are encouraged to apply.
The application consists of an online Application Form. In addition to completing this form, a CV has to be submitted to europeancrucible(at)hw.ac.uk. Scottish applicants must apply by Monday, 24th January 2022,17:00 (GMT); European applicants must apply by Monday, 21st February 2022,17:00 (GMT).
Once awarded a place on the European Crucible Event, all training, networking and administration costs for participants will be covered.
Scottish Crucible and Scottish Research Pools
Scottish Crucible is a research leadership and development programme for Scotland’s research leaders of the future for over 10 years. Built on the pillars of collaboration, interdisciplinarity, innovation and leadership, Scottish Crucible engaged with business, industry, media, policy and the public sector, and created an Alumni Network of 300 of Scotland’s most able early career researchers from all academic disciplines, now representing 29 Higher Education Institutions, Research Institutes and SMEs.
Research Pooling was launched in Scotland under a unique collaborative model in 2004. This created strategic alliances between Scottish universities with the aim of enhancing world class research competitiveness and advanced training through strategic cooperation between Higher Education Institutions. The Scottish Research Pools are SUPA (Physics), ScotChem (Chemistry), SULSA (Life Sciences), SRPE (Engineering), SICSA (Computer Science), SAGES (Geoscience), MASTS (Marine Science and Technology), SINAPSE (Medical Imaging), ETP (Energy Science and Technology), SIRE (Economics), and Soillse (Gaelic Language and Culture).
