The Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina arose from the Scientific Society which was established in 1951 by Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, passing the resolution on foundation of Scientific Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the highest scientific and artistic institution on the territory of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After the proclamation of Bosnia and Herzegovina as an independent state (in 1992), the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina became the national academy. Thus far the Academy has renewed or established cooperation with a number of foreign academies and international institutions, including:
