Asian Biotech Hotspots

Zeitraum: 29.04.2010 Ort: Düsseldorf Land: Deutschland

India is the world’s fourth largest producer of pharmaceuticals, and is internationally considered to be one of its most promising biotech markets. Since the reintroduction of patent protection laws for pharmaceutical products in 2005, the subcontinent is increasingly opening up to foreign companies. At the same time, Indian investors are putting money into development at home – for example in the market for biosimilars – with the long-term goal of gaining a foothold in Europe and the rest of the developed world.

According to its own statistics, Japan is the second largest healthcare market in the world after the US. The pharmaceuticals market there has been traditionally dominated by established companies supported by a small number of innovative spin-offs and biotech firms. But as the pressure to change increases in the sector in Japan, the importance of cooperation between pharma companies and specialised biotech firms has likewise grown – and Germany’s biotech sector can profit from it.
