Sustainable Development 2011 - harnessing the energy of communities

Zeitraum: 23.02.2011 Ort: London Land: Großbritannien

“Our ambitions are clear, we want the UK to move to low carbon society, and we intend for Britain to be a world leader in the move to a green economy.”
Greg Barker, Minister of State for Climate Change, Opening speech to European Future Energy Forum.

Environmental and green technologies can help reduce waste, conserve energy and generate the clean energies of the future. Sustainable development projects, such as retrofitting and energy-efficient designs, are helping to vastly reduce the carbon emissions. The UK has a fantastic opportunity to be at the forefront of new technologies, innovations and energy solutions.

Lower than expected levels of economic growth have resulted in the European Commission considering whether to raise the 2020 carbon emissions reduction target to 30%. At the same time, global warming scepticism has been on the rise – fuelled by the inaction at the Copenhagen Summit and the controversy of the UEA Climate Change Unit's leaked emails – and the climate change message has struggled to resonate across society effectively. Rather than a centralised, target-driven approach, should we be looking to climate change policies to build broad agreements across all segments of society? As public spending is being severely cut, and mitigation and adaptation to climate change are seen as costly, will consensus on environmental action be further fragmented and sustainable schemes shelved.

The 2011 Sustainable Development Conference will look at the carbon emission targets, the big society agenda and the green investment bank, to name just a few. We will also debate the key issues and policies that will shape the UK’s green agenda.

Speakers Include:

  • Chris Church, Chair, UK Low Carbon Communities Network
  • Professor Robert Watson, Chief Scientific Advisor, DEFRA
  • Jonathan Tillson, Head of Sustainable Development Unit, Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs
  • Craig Bennett, Policy and Campaigns Director, Friends of the Earth
  • Andy Deacon, Head of Local Delivery, Energy Saving Trust
  • Farooq Mohammed, Business Development Director, British Gas Community Energy

Panel Debate:

“Harnessing the Energy of Communities”
The Coalition has plans for community schemes to help create jobs, energy-efficiencies and generate significant financial savings through economies of scale. How will government policies help to remove the barriers that prevent communities from taking action? How will these policies be managed in practice and what role will local authorities have to play? The panel will also discuss how best to support enterprise, innovation and growth in the green economy.
