NXPO was first founded in 2008 as the National Science Technology and Innovation Policy Office (STI Office). As a result of the establishment of the new Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) in May 2019, the role of STI Office has been expanded to encompass policy of higher education, science, research and innovation and the organization was renamed the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO).
