About the European and EU Centre
The Monash European and EU Centre (MEEUC) is one of just three centres funded by the External Relations Directorate of the European Commission in Australia and of 26 such EU Centres worldwide. Formally launched in Melbourne on 31 July 2006, the Centre is a joint undertaking by the Commission in Brussels and Monash University in Melbourne.
The multidisciplinary Centre encompassing the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, and Law at Monash University provides teaching, research and outreach programmes on European and European Union matters.
Key strengths of the Centre include the research expertise of its members and its multidisciplinary Master in European and International Studies. The Centre works closely with the Monash University Prato Centre in Italy, with the Monash Asia Institute and with other key Centres and Institutes at Monash University.
The Centre also collaborates with EU Centres in the Asia-Pacific and beyond, and with universities providing research and teaching on Europe and the EU. This includes the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris, France, the Institute for European Studies of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Brussels, Belgium), the European Union Centre of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh (USA), the National Centre for Research on Europe (University of Canterbury, Christchurch), the Centre for European Studies (ANU) in Canberra, the Innovative Universities European Union Centre at LaTrobe University and the European Studies Centre at Sichuan University (China).
The Centre works collaboratively with FEAST (Forum for Europe-Australia Science and Technology Cooperation), the Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA), the Delegation of the European Union to Australia and New Zealand, the embassies of EU member states in Australia and communities of European origin in Melbourne.
In 2009, the MEEUC was awarded a Jean Monnet Chair (Professor Pascaline Winand) and together with three Centres of EU Studies within the region (the National Centre for Research on Europe, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, Fudan University in China and Keio University in Japan) became part of a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence Asia-Pacific. In 2010 the MEEUC also won an Erasmus Mundus award together with the University of Limerick (lead applicant), the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and eight other universities.
