BTC plays a role to market technology by promoting and selling it to the society. It is also intended to bridge and to match any technology needed by enterprises, while the technology is created and developed by academicians at research and development (R&D) institutes, university or possibly by any enterprises.
BTC can be also called a technology intermediary agency, with prior task to get trust, to convince and to enable SMEs using technology, as well as to offer consultancy services focused on technology, to promote technology transfer, and to provide access to databases registering technology offers and technology requests.
The establishment of BTC is based on the outcomes of the project PERISKOP which was supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The study finalised in June 2002 recommended establishing a network of business and technology centers that serve to connect the research world with the industrial world, in order to work together to build the regional economy. Special regard in this intermediation efforts is given to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The network is affiliated with the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, & Higher Education.
