Deep transformations of international relationships together with the rapid evolution of innovations are leading to renewed geopolitical rivalries and fragmentation. At the same time, the terrifying prospect of a nuclear conflict makes the use of nuclear military technologies a real threat. Understanding the rationale and implications of these science and technology-based innovations in the international sphere and putting them into the context of European sovereignty so they can be the subject of analysis, education and dissemination is precisely the rationale for this workshop. In short, how can we educate the next generation of scientists and engineers to address geopolitical challenges?
In fact, there is an increasing demand for experts in a particular technology domain who will be able to understand and manage the challenges of new technologies while reflecting and reviewing their impact on geopolitics. Vice versa, scientists, and engineers need to be aware of how developments could reshape the delicate balance of international relationships.
The workshop "Technology and Science Diplomacy in an Age of Digital Sovereignty and Nuclear Threats" will take place from the 28th to 29th of November 2022 at the JOSEPHS Innovation Laboratory in Nuremberg, Germany. It is organised by the Jean Monnet Chair on Technology and Science Diplomacy for European Sovereignty (TechDip) held at UPM, Spain, the Chair of Science, Technology and Gender Studies at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, the Technology Diplomacy and International Cooperation Community of EELISA European University.
The organisers envision this workshop as the starting point for the establishment of a university Certificate on Technology and Science Diplomacy jointly administered by the three aforementioned partners.
