The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a UK government body that carries out civil research in science and engineering, and funds UK research in areas including particle physics, nuclear physics, space science and astronomy (both ground-based and space-based). STFC is a non-departmental public body (NDPB) established by Royal Charter in 1965 and receive most of its funding through the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
STFC funds and operates a number of large science facilities on behalf of the UK, located both within and outside of the UK, many offering research and development access to both academic and commercial users.
