Three predecessors of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were brought together in 1970, with the establishment of NOAA, an agency within the Department of Commerce.
NOAA Line Offices are:
- National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service
- National Marine Fisheries Service
- National Ocean Service
- National Weather Service
- Office of Marine & Aviation Operations
- Office of Oceanic & Atmospheric Research (NOAA Research).
Working in partnership with other organizational units of the NOAA, NOAA Research enables better forecasts, earlier warnings for natural disasters, and a greater understanding of the Earth. Its role is to provide unbiased science to better manage the environment, nationally, and globally.
